COAST Brewing Co., a family-run brewery on the old Navy base in North Charleston, was opened in 2007 by brewer David and co-owner Jaime. David began homebrewing in 1996, graduated from the American Brewers Guild in Davis, California, and worked at Charleston’s Southend Brewery before installing a brewhouse salvaged from a closed brewpub in Macon, Georgia. Jaime founded the advocacy group Pop the Cap SC, which became the SC Brewers Guild. Environmental care guides the operation: the grains are certified organic, ingredients are local where possible, and the hops are left uncertified to keep creative options open. Visitors can relax in a large yard shaded by a live oak, with children welcome and leashed dogs allowed in the yard and on the deck. A short menu of real food is cooked in tallow without seed oils, and packaged beer and growlers are sold to go.
